Java Has a New Website
- steve_taylor 4y agoThis is just the consumer website for people downloading the plugin.
- deleted 4y ago[deleted]
- i386 4y agoIt sure does. A blank page here on iOS.
- dolmen 4y agoRequires 3rd party JS.
- occoder 4y agoThis is what I got: This site https://www.java.com/en/ is experiencing technical difficulty. We are aware of the issue and are working as quick as possible to correct the issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. To speak with an Oracle sales representative: 1.800.ORACLE1. To contact Oracle Corporate Headquarters from anywhere in the world: 1.650.506.7000. To get technical support in the United States: 1.800.633.0738. Incident Number: 18.a78d4017.1653908207.1bf41725
- thfuran 4y agoIncident Number: 18.a78d4017.1653908207.1bf41725 That's no number...

- Shadonototra 4y agoFinally a change, the old one looked like a phishing website to download a malware However, this new one looks very amateurish, it's very ugly, and still doesn't inspire confidence
- peanut_worm 4y agoThe website is almost empty on mobile but still takes 3 seconds to load and I get a white screen while its loading. How did everyone get so bad at web development?
- jabiko 4y agoIt seems like java.com is powered by https://www.oracle.com/content-management/ https://www.oracle.com/content-management/ After the page is loaded some JavaScript loads the actual page content via a REST API. While this takes place you are looking at a white screen.
- miohtama 4y agoEating your own Oracle food.
- nomemory 4y agoThe moment people with 0 technical background started to make technical decisions.
- exabrial 4y agoSPAs are a problem literally _everywhere_: When all you have is a sledgehammer, everything is a rusty nail just waiting to be pounded sideways and abandoned for someone else to fix.
- grandpoobah 4y agoA website design that perfectly captures how programmers feel about Java. Unremarkable, bland, corporate, boring. No passion, no feeling of progress. Just boring old Java being boring old Java. Microsoft's .NET site is far more appealing - https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/ https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/
- Jcowell 4y agoThe Microsoft .NET site is so much noise. Maybe it’s all relevant. Maybe all the information I need Is on that page. But shit there’s a point where simple IS better. If I’m going to Java.com it’s for 2 reasons: to download the JDK or look at documentation. The simplicity of the site gets out of my way to do just that.
- KptMarchewa 4y agoIDK why .NET site is also extremely... Microsofty. A lot of buttons that I never want to click. Rust or Go sites are more appealing. https://www.rust-lang.org/ https://www.rust-lang.org/ https://go.dev/ https://go.dev/ Python one seems more dated. https://www.python.org/ https://www.python.org/
- Throwawayaerlei 4y agoDon't know about you, but I personally want Java and the JVM to be boring. It's a foundation for some systems I use like a TI embedded programming IDE based on Eclipse and my use of Clojure. I want it to do its job with as little excitement as possible.
- SahAssar 4y agoWhen people say they want boring tech what they usually mean is something along the lines of "stable", "predictable" and perhaps without change for the sake of change. The java website to me is more boring in the sense of soulless and corporate.
- teapot418 4y agoThe new java.com site isn't just boring, its bad. It looks like a domain parking page. With so little content it manages to use two different font stacks and 6 different font sizes. I think part of the problem is that they haven't given up on Java.com being a consumer website. From https://www.java.com/en/download/help/whatis_java.html https://www.java.com/en/download/help/whatis_java.html > Java.com, this website, is intended for consumers who may still require Java for their desktop applications
- dolmen 4y agoBlank page with uBlock Origin. Because it uses 3rd party JS from orecdn.oraclecloud.com.
- teapot418 4y agoI don't think uBlock Origin has a blanket 3rd party block standard as part of any of the normal lists or settings. Running uBlock Origin here and it loads. Do a lot of sites break with 3rd party blocking?
- galoisgirl 4y agoI love how the landing page features "Uninstall help".
- ncr100 4y agoReminds me of "goto fail" somehow. Loving how Uninstallation is a top level user flow Oracle advertises. Lowered expectation . I suppose that's what casual users need most often?
- haunter 4y ago"Uninstall help" Yep perfect landing page and ad
- sto_hristo 4y agoAnd it doesn't allow you to select which java version to download.
- exabrial 4y agoThere are a lot of really neat things in Java that other languages lack, but you wouldn't know looking that website. These frameworks take the language to the next level and can iterate independently of the core language. * CDI 2.0/3.0 (OpenWebBeans / Weld) * Junit5 * Mockito * Microprofile * Quarkus * Graal Maven/Gradle are also very polished compared to whats available in other language ecosystems (To this day, no analog exists for C/C++). I very much enjoy using the language and ecosystem.
