> it was genocide
Genocide literally means "the deliberate killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group"
Nothing of the sort happened. Words and their definitions matter.
- tonyg 4y agoSee point e of article 2 of https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genocide_Convention https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genocide_Convention, the operative legal definition, which reads "Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group."
- orlp 4y agoGenocide is the intentional destruction of a large 'group' of people (be it ethnical, racial, religious, etc). Removing young children from their parents to be placed outside the group is a "tried and tested" method of doing so. In fact, it's so common it was included in the five acts of the Genocide Convention and has a separate subsection on its Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genocide#Forcibly_transferring_children_of_the_group_to_another_group https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genocide#Forcibly_transferring...
- jokoon 4y agoDoes that mean the great leap forward was not a genocide? What about the holodomor?
