I suspect that there is a self full-filling prophecy for VC funding. If you aim small (read 50-500 million dollar business), then odds are a DecaBillion dollar business will eat your lunch sooner or later. The only middle ground would appear to be in businesses which serve defensible tight niches, but in software these mostly appear to boil down to consultancies with a small set of customers.
