A Bridge Between Some Daikin HVAC Units and MQTT – Rewritten in Ada
- SteveHM 4y agoI just released https://github.com/SMerrony/daikin2mqtt https://github.com/SMerrony/daikin2mqtt which has been entirely rewritten in Ada. It provides a way of using some Daikin HVAC units in home automation software that doesn't have an explicit 'integration' for such devices, or directly with a dashboard like Node-Red.
- ajdude 4y agoI see a lot of efforts to be right software in Rust. People tend to forget that Ada is still alive and well, and I would like to see an initiative to rewrite more software in Ada.
- pyjarrett 4y agoMost of us aren't out to rewrite anything. There's not many of us, we're just using Ada to write things. There's a bunch of work at https://alire.ada.dev/ https://alire.ada.dev/
- nicolaslem 4y agoIs this local communication? I could swear when I was in the market for an HVAC I checked Daikin units and they could only be controlled through their cloud. It is the only reason I got a Gree unit that, with some tinkering and proper firewalling, is local only.
- SteveHM 4y agoYes - all local, no 'cloud' at all.
- joezydeco 4y agoI've grown to really appreciate MQTT over the last few years. It's useful in ways I didn't even expect. It's just enough transport over TCP to be useful without resorting to HTTP complexities.
- jburgess777 4y agoAnother person reverse engineered the hardware protocol and built a replacement controller which also implements MQTT https://www.revk.uk/2022/04/new-air-con-part-2.html https://www.revk.uk/2022/04/new-air-con-part-2.html https://github.com/revk/ESP32-Daikin https://github.com/revk/ESP32-Daikin
- sdflhasjd 4y agoI wrote something similar for my "TCL" branded indoor unit that had a Tuya adaptor. The Tuya/ESP32 board spoke to the unit's controller through a serial protocol. I flahsed it with Tasmota and enabled the Serial/MQTT bridge. After reverse-enghineering the protocol, I wrote a bridge that took the raw messages, decoded the machine status into an MQTT structure Home Assistant could understand, and vice-versa. Here's a snippet of some of the encode/decode methods if anyone else is trying work with these TCL units. https://pastebin.com/WxBSFgmQ https://pastebin.com/WxBSFgmQ
