> A wise man said, “Before you speak, let your words pass through three gates. At the first gate, ask yourself, “Is it true?” At the second gate ask, “Is it necessary?” At the third gate ask, “Is it kind?”
it was the Buddha.

- blenderdt 4y agoFor those who don't want to read the linked article: "... I tracked the quote back to a book of Victorian poems! It’s from “Miscellaneous Poems,” by Mary Ann Pietzker, published in 1872"
- goodpoint 4y agotl;dr it's not a direct quote, but the very same concept was expressed in sutra: says only what it well-spoken, not what is poorly spoken; only what is just, not what is unjust; only what is endearing, not what is unendearing; only what is true, not what is false
- chandureddyvari 4y agoActual source(Manu smriti Verse 4.138) quotes: 'Satyam bruyat priyam bruyat. Na bruyat satyam apriyam. Priyam cha nanrutham bruyat. Esha dharmah sanatanah’ This somewhat means, ‘Speak the truth that is pleasant. Never speak the truth that is unpleasant. And, never speak the untruth even if it’s pleasant. This is eternal philosophy of righteousness.” More commentary here: https://www.wisdomlib.org/hinduism/book/manusmriti-with-the-commentary-of-medhatithi/d/doc200246.html https://www.wisdomlib.org/hinduism/book/manusmriti-with-the-...
- asimovfan 4y ago"Monks, a statement endowed with five factors is well-spoken, not ill-spoken. It is blameless & unfaulted by knowledgeable people. Which five? "It is spoken at the right time. It is spoken in truth. It is spoken affectionately. It is spoken beneficially. It is spoken with a mind of good-will." — AN 5.198 btw he later on defines "beneficial" as something that is immediately applicable for the listener, which is just extra good in my opinion.
- Heyso 4y agoThat's Socrate ?
- noisy_boy 4y agoRearrange: say = isTrue && (isKind || isNecessary)
- henpa 4y agoMore like: say = isTrue && isKind && isNecessary ;-)
- noisy_boy 4y agoNot really, what is True and necessary may not be always be kind but needs to be said anyway
- Dylan16807 4y agoYou're giving different advice! The quote is very clear that words have to fit all three.
- noisy_boy 4y agoTouche - it is change of logic and not just rearrangement as I claimed.
