Being passive-aggressively told "blacklist" is a no-no word is not.
If you were really clever, you'd let the user set a "sensitivity" level for the writing from "normal human speak" to "corporate PR approved".
- dane-pgp 5y ago> you'd let the user set a "sensitivity" level for the writing But what if the company found out (and some employee leaked) the fact that most people deliberately set the default level to "normal human speak", and its campaign to replace and redefine words doesn't have any democratic legitimacy (let alone add any commercial value)?
- nicbou 5y agoIt depends on who you write for. As a non-native, non-American speaker, I'd be happy to know if I'm accidentally offending the people I'm writing to.
- School-Cotton 5y agoThat's the problem, though: the tool doesn't actually tell you that. The vast majority of Americans are not offended by words like "motherboard".

- onepointsixC 5y agoBut you aren't. Saying that "Motherboard" is offensive is basically misinformation.
- pbhjpbhj 5y agoI can't even imagine what the supposed offense is here? Like, 'I identify both as a mainboard and male, your use of motherboard offends me'???
- nostromo 5y ago"Mother" has been determined to be "not inclusive" because it excludes men who can get pregnant and give birth. And this isn't some made up controversy. The Biden administration has been replacing "mother" with "birthing person." https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2021/09/pregnant-people-gender-identity/620031/ https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2021/09/pregnan...
- matheusmoreira 5y agoI'm not a native english speaker either. Chances are you aren't offending anyone. You probably know exactly which words of the english language are unambiguously offensive. Words like motherboard just aren't offensive.
- babypuncher 5y agoIn this particular case, the tool being discussed is meant almost exclusively for people writing "corporate PR approved" content, so it makes sense that the sensitivity setting is cranked.
- vorpalhex 5y agoI do a lot of things in Google docs beyond write PR releases...
