Are you after a tiling window manager? If so, why aren't you using a tiling window manager?
> Yes, you can use third-party scripts (Autohotkey, etc.)
Are you after shortcuts for positioning your windows around? Windows already has those.
- pbhjpbhj 5y agoCool, so when I launch apps from Startup folder, what's the config that puts them on my second [virtual] desktop? When I open a second MS Word window, what's the config to stop that opening maximised, tell it which desktop to open on (stop it maximising all other Word windows would be good too). If I launch an app, then switch desktops, how do I stop the app appearing on the later desktop? Bonus if I can set where an app opens [from a shortcut, say]. Thanks, no-one else seems to know how to do these things.
- spartanatreyu 5y agoHmm, it depends. Virtual Desktops and Multiple Displays are different. If you are using multiple displays, the app will open on the display it was previously opened on. (Unless a display has been removed or added in between, in which case it gets a little trickier). If Windows can't figure out a proper guess it will open apps on the primary display. Apps will always open in the current Virtual Desktop. There's no point setting an App like Word to open in one Virtual Desktop over another since it's likely to have a word document open in a "Work" virtual desktop and a "Study" virtual desktop. If you want something to be opened in a specific virtual desktop, switch to that virtual desktop with Win + Ctrl + Left/Right, then open the app. If you want to move something between virtual desktops, show all virtual desktops with Win + Tab, then drag whatever windows to whatever desktops you want. As a bit of a tangent: Firefox's containers work amazingly with Virtual Desktops. I can have a firefox window open for personal, work, and D&D. And none of the accounts between them are shared, and there's no history pollution between them.
