What Would It Take to Manufacture Perovskite Solar Cells in Space?
- imtringued 5y agoThis somehow reminds me of that unsupervised Minecraft AI. The AI didn't know how to fight so it just ran away from mobs to avoid dying. Fleeing from battle is cheap and reliable but it is also a local minimum. You could argue that Minecraft is a very peaceful game but the reason why I bring this anecdote up is that for a bot running away from skeleton archers is not that easy. The AI developed combat capabilities sufficient to kill every other mob from fighting one unavoidable mob. I'm starting to think that solving climate change is a stepping stone for space exploration. If you can harness energy directly from the sun and store it for long periods of time then you have all the energy building blocks you need for a long term colony on mars. You can't dig up dead plant matter on the moon or mars. You don't have millions of years of your ancestors' corpses as a crutch to turn into energy. You don't even have an oxygen rich atmosphere to avoid storing the oxidizer separately! You have to do everything from scratch and everything is harder than on earth. Enjoy running away from the challenge!
