not to be rude... It seems that china would benefit from ancient history appearing in their land that changes what we know about human migration. I recall hearing that the Chinese government for example is convinced humans migrated out of china rather than Africa.
So how can we know what is true vs. what is dubious or outright planted and falsified?
- butlerm 5y agoI think the answer is you can't know. You have to trust the integrity of the peer review process (at Nature in this case) until someone comes up with better evidence. 'Nature' is a well respected scientific journal, not an organ of the Chinese government.
- jchiu1106 5y agoWhat are you talking about? Source? I was in China until I was 20 but never have I heard anyone saying humans are migrated out of China.
- AlotOfReading 5y agoWhat they're talking about is the multiregional human origins hypothesis, of which certain Chinese academics are pretty much the last remaining advocates. Basically, the argument is that homo erectus evolved into modern humans in multiple areas outside Africa. Chinese variants of this idea (popularized by Wu Xinzhi) argue that this went so far as to create identifiably unique "kinds" of humans in greater China that have continuity with modern populations. However, it's hard to recognize modern Chinese populations as independently evolved because their unique morphology has been diluted through hybridization with other "kinds" of humans. I wouldn't expect a 20 year old to be exposed to the theoretical leanings of paleoanthropologists though, so it's not very surprising you missed it.
- turndown 5y ago1. Nothing here has any impact on what people in Mainland China believe or what the CCP tells them to believe 2. None of this is out-of-your-mind crazy, and totally believable to find something like this in the timeframe they found it in(40k BP is after the "accepted" Out-Of-Africa theory date). Of course the CCP propagandizes everything they can so something like this is denoted as "In China"(to hilariously draw connections between them and people who were no probably no more Chinese than you or I.) If you are familiar with this topic(Stone Age technology) you could probably think of sites 60k+ years older than this one in Africa or the Levant that are significantly more interesting than this one, but it's still news worthy.
