This lazy approach to road safety of putting increasingly complex speed cameras everywhere is severely negligent. Invest the time, effort and money to make the roads safer. Make them German Autobahn level safe. Are these profitable yet empty gestures really fooling anyone?
- hackerfromthefu 5y agoIs it about safety or tax/revenue? Some of the camera companies even did revenue share omg
- tmm84 5y agoIf it was about safety vehicles could be speed limited (obviously not very freedom oriented). Which means this is almost certainly about revenue. Doesn't help that new drivers are quickly shown that driving the speed limit is simply wishful thinking.

- gregmac 5y agoI think my first intro to this was from a Not Just Bikes video on speed limits [1], and that profoundly affected my opinion on this stuff. I now think a lot of road design is just utterly broken, and it includes speed limits, what that channel (and other related) refer to as "stroads", and intersections (roundabouts vs traffic lights). That video in particular is highly relevant to the speed camera thing. [1] https://youtu.be/bglWCuCMSWc https://youtu.be/bglWCuCMSWc
- seanmcdirmid 5y ago> Make them German Autobahn level safe. You think that the Germans don't use speed cameras? Not all of their roads are (or can be) the autobahn. https://www.expaturm.com/german-finance/busy-speed-cameras-germany/ https://www.expaturm.com/german-finance/busy-speed-cameras-g...
- tmm84 5y agoFooling? Well, it forces people to drive slower or pay out of pocket for the privilege. Those who can't afford it will have to slow it down naturally. So, it doesn't fix the real problem of making roads safer for higher speed driving but the symptom of roads being unsafe at higher speeds. From a city/state/etc level this pays for itself and probably then some where as the alternative of better roads is pure cost with the benefits not being an item on the yearly audit.
