Lancet journal already used terms like "bodies with vaginas". Got a lot of flak for it and I think it was partially justified. I think medicine should stay clear of ideology. DEI doesn't provide anything but racism in my opinion.
- detaro 5y ago> I think medicine should stay clear of ideology Medicine can't stay clear of ideology just because things medicine has to deal with get declared as "ideology". If anything, you are saying "medicine should follow my ideology", and we have lots of examples how that collides badly.
- raxxorrax 5y agoYou don't even know what my position is. But this adaption of language is pretty indicative in my opinion. Maybe I am wrong, but more relevant to medicine is sex instead of gender. Mandatory bias training is as far away from a scientific approach as possible. This is mostly slacktivism that demands action from others anyway. > The new plan makes it virtually impossible for faculty to object to DEI measures without jeopardizing their careers
- detaro 5y agoApologies, I clearly didn't make it clear enough that I specifically was arguing against the quoted sentiment, not so much the specific examples. The idea of medicine that stays away from "ideology" doesn't work. Regarding the example, well-done bias training could be useful to medicine and scientific method, given what we know about biases in medicine. But it indeed is likely to turn into a checkbox exercise.
