I think the real reason is that cloud software development has enabled microservices. Meaning, if you arent on AWS or GCP, forget it. But if you are, its a paradigm that fits very well with cloud software architecture. Those criticizing it for the complexity, probably just havent spent enough time in code bases where it makes sense.
