I wonder how many direct routes just aren't possible anymore as they can't fly over Russian airspace and can't fit within ETOPS safety margins. We had our direct flight from EWR-BOM cancelled due to the current issues.

It's been interesting to check the situation occasionally on sites like flightaware. Definitely a lot of traffic rerouting through Turkish airspace.

Sounds like a lame excuse for your EWR-BOM flight. A routing over Turkey (bypassing UK/RU airspace), instead of direct, is only +2.7% distance. http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=ewr-bom,+ewr-ist-bom http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=ewr-bom,+ewr-ist-bom (I know, I know, you may not actually be able to route "optimally" due to other airspace clearance requirements/costs/weather/etc)
