- twhiteseven25 5y agoThis was my first introduction to overfitting. Great explanation of that concept, in particular.
- jwilber 5y agoIn case you wanted another, I wrote a similar visual explanation (though different visuals/narrative) covering the closely related Bias Variance Tradeoff! https://mlu-explain.github.io/bias-variance/ https://mlu-explain.github.io/bias-variance/
- spupe 5y agoThis is excellent, really beautiful.
- Utkarsh_Mood 5y agoLooks amazing, great work!
- yosef123 5y agoThe graphics are incredibly well done, props
- dotancohen 5y agoThis is terrific! However it seems that the charts are using feet and the text is using meters. This should probably be addressed.
- jihadjihad 5y agoThis could use a (2015) in the title. I remember first seeing it as a Show HN [0] post, and it still holds up today. 0: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9955553 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9955553

- makach 5y agoYes, oldie but a goodie. In my bookmarks, *necro
- monkeydust 5y agoAre there any tools in the market that would allow a business user to create such a visual story with zero or minimal coding?
- shepardrtc 5y agohttps://www.ceros.com https://www.ceros.com
- tomthe 5y agoNot zero coding, but idyll tries to shine in that space. You write markdown + variables and include some visualizations and out comes a scrollytelling site. https://idyll-lang.org/docs https://idyll-lang.org/docs
- tonyhschu 5y agoSecond this. Idyll is the closest thing I know that makes this sort of thing approachable. Those dot animations are unfortunately very custom.
- jer0me 5y agoI've read a few things made with ArcGIS StoryMaps. While focused on interactive maps, it looks like it can be used for general multimedia stories as well: https://storymaps.arcgis.com/ https://storymaps.arcgis.com/
- wodenokoto 5y agoThe animation is amazing and scrolling through the article is really cool. But reading the article you are constantly stuck negotiating where the text is on and off screen and where the animation is.
- tonyhschu 5y agoYeah! This was done before CSS scroll-snap is a thing. I'd probably use scroll snap now. See: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/CSS_Scroll_Snap https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/CSS_Scroll_...
- jackallis 5y agodoes anyone feel like this is viz overload to senses? My brain is screaming.
- tonyhschu 5y agoFunny to see this on the homepage today. Part 1 was done so long ago now that looking back on that code is equal parts intimidating and embarrassing. Maybe this is the motivation I need to actually fix that stupid feet/meter thing.
- snapetom 5y agoHaha. I remember this. Thanks for creating this back in the day. It was good fun and a good intro.
- torbTurret 5y agoAmazon has similar articles covering individual algorithms: https://mlu-explain.github.io/ https://mlu-explain.github.io/
