66 Year Old Coder Writes (First) Python App Tinydomain.net
- ccarsona 5y agoExcited to show off my first Python app. This old dog is still trying to learn a few new tricks. :) Tinydomain can help you find good one word domains under 8 characters. It's very fast and of course free to use https://tinydomain.net https://tinydomain.net If you have any questions about Tinydomain, or any coding-related questions, let me know. Roger
- cercatrova 5y agoNice, good work. You might be able to repost this as a Show HN which often gets more traffic. https://news.ycombinator.com/showhn.html https://news.ycombinator.com/showhn.html https://news.ycombinator.com/show https://news.ycombinator.com/show
- ccarsona 5y agoExcellent, thanks for the tip :)
- cafard 5y agoOld dog? I'd call you a young whipper-snapper. But good for you!
- ccarsona 5y agoThank you for your comment :)
- ilaksh 5y agoAny chance you could make it combine search and random? Like search for random that contains the substring. Anyway how did you make it so fast? Are the word and TLD lists in the browser already? That's a good marketing angle. But honestly I expect a significant portion of this is built on your existing web development knowledge which you are not at all new to.
- ccarsona 5y agoYes, I have considered the substring option but Search and Random come from different sources which is why it is very fast. Searches are returned using DNS Queries which is very fast as long as it is limited to 60-80 results. Random is database driven and updated daily which makes larger returns very fast. And yes, I have been developing and coding for quite some time, but I finally got around to learning python about 8 months ago (I have wanted to learn Python for about 10 years but business demands didn't allow for it). TD is my first public Python app :)
- paskozdilar 5y agoNice to see a senior tinkering with modern technology. Would you provide any more context about the "66 Year Old Coder" part: >what did you do professionally? >when did you start programming? >why start programming at that age - was it boredom, curiosity, need for money, etc.?
- ccarsona 5y agoKeep in mind, the internet did not exist when I started working, so I have lived in two different universes. My first business career was in transportation but at around 38 I got interested in the "Electronic Highway". I have been online since 2000. The first scripting language I learned was Perl. I moved to PHP around 2003 but most of the coding at that time was for in house usage, not public. Around 2010 I developed this desire to learn Python but life and business demands kept getting in the way. And, while I still have a number of accounts I maintain and upgrade, I have more time and thus started learning Python about eight months ago. Money? TD's Sponsored links to the registrars produce a 'small' amount of revenue. My son calculates my new found fortune in terms of Mac&Cheese dinners. To date, we're at about 24 boxes :)
