It’s unfortunate that this bill will reduce iPhone security to the level of macOS and consumers won’t have the choice to buy a secure device anymore (if the Supreme Court upholds it, because you know FAANG is taking it to court immediately if it passes).
- aaomidi 5y agoPoint 1: If you don't want to use alternative stores, then don't use them. Point 2: Human review never stopped security problems, and has never, ever been considered of any real value when it comes to designing secure systems. Point 3: iPhone's response to various 0days has been less than stellar. Right now, when a security issue pops up, we have literally 0 choice other than wait for Apple to fix it - even if the fix can be written up and sent out immediately, we have to wait for Apple to package an update. Giving more choice in how fast you can patch your system actually increases your security.
- daniel-cussen 5y ago> Point 1: If you don't want to use alternative stores, then don't use them. That's my choice, for one. I support there being alternatives, but won't use them. And I am well aware there's ways out of the "jail" (as in "jailbreak") I just choose to stay inside. Same goes for the dark web, rather just stay in the light.

- aaomidi 5y agoWhy can't that be done on the phone?
- anaganisk 5y agoIs it sarcasm? But on a serious note, Android ecosystem survived without iPhone grade security. iPhone couldn’t stop Pegasus. At best iOS appstore is a hurdle for well meaning apps too. Having said all this, I doubt iOS will allow anything new if a third party app store does happen. I have a strong feeling it would be a app store api backed UI just like how safari is the base engine for all alternate browsers.
- dkonofalski 5y ago>Android ecosystem survived without iPhone grade security Survived but didn't thrive. You don't know how many people have had information, data, identities, or other assets stolen or compromised because of the lack of security. People on Hacker News don't need that kind of hand-holding but, unfortunately, I feel like the majority of consumer device users do.
