I ask myself what people see as key technology in 5G.
Do I want 300mbit/s mobile internet? Sure, would be nice. Do I need it? Certainly not. Also not really keen to advantage intelligence services. What is even meant by that? Surveillance and tracking of the population?
IoT is a nice to have, but consumer interest is not that high to be honest. I still do only very rarely use mobile internet. For tethering it could be nice, but as long as wireless networks are ubiquitous...
Far more interesting is the availability of mobile networks and I doubt very much that 5G will improve that. On the contrary as long as the infrastructure is in development.
Part of the reason 5G is not too attractive to me is shitty phones. That is something Google could have improved. The space race was at least interesting, the mobile network race? Call me when we have a winner...
I don't find it surprising that telcos concentrate on 4G here. Far less infrastructure costs and most consumers are probably content with the speed. Also most IoT devices don't need a low latency connection.
- emteycz 5y ago5G seems to be very good for high-density situations, so it makes sense the Chinese would invest heavily into it while the US wouldn't be nearly as interested. Sometimes people just have different needs. Here in Europe (Czech Republic), 4G is mostly everywhere and 5G is available in major cities. The telcos sell a special "5G unlimited" tariff which gives you unlimited data and unlimited speed when you're connected to 5G and 10Mb/s on 4G + unlimited voice and SMS (costs cca $50).
- raxxorrax 5y agoTrue. They also didn't have any infrastructure in some regions so it makes sense to install the newest tech. But if too many people are happy with 4G, it may be difficult to establish new infrastructure. I have 4G and very rarely use it. Most of the time on holidays. For IoT it just seems like a cost factor without too much benefit. I doubt our customers would even appreciate it if our devices don't use local nets to phone home.
