Nitrogen can release energy higher than that of any known non-nuclear reaction
- Someone 5y agoNo, a model predicts that HeN₄ is (¿somewhat?) stable at pressures above 8.5GPa. If I do the math right, that’s about 80,000 times atmospheric pressure. We don’t know yet how to make this stuff. On the plus side, the paper suggests a route to create it, and the source material isn’t scarce. On the minus side, there’s plenty of helium in the universe, but Helium is scarce on earth. So, nice theoretical result, but I don’t see this being used for energy storage soon, if at all.

This t-N has an energy density of 11.3 MJ/kg, which is about 3 times higher than TNT, but it’s arguably not all that impressive.
