The truckers shutting down Canada's capital

- xdennis 5y agoYou're showing your true colors when you say that putting the Canadian flag and a sign saying "freedom" is despicable and desecration.
- moistly 5y agoTerry Fox sure as fuck would not support the protest and like the vast majority of Canadians would despise anti-mask/anti-vax lunatics, white supremacist shitheels, and the assholes who are blaring their horns in people’s neighbourhoods for days on end, as poll after poll has shown. Canadians on the whole found it really disgraceful to drape the Fox memorial in political slogans. Suck it up, buttercup: it was the wrong thing to do.

- raintrees 5y agoQuite a few trucks on scene... And many out in the area, under what I am told are rather cold conditions...
- AstroJetson 5y agoEstimates are 2,700 to 3,000 trucks. Most of them are not 18 wheelers but pick up style trucks. Most of the people are from the Ottawa area. According to the news reports they started coming into town and just parking in the middle of the streets. Current temps are -10F going to 12F on Sunday. It will be interesting to see how long the protest lasts in that kind of weather.
- VancouverMan 5y ago-10 °C isn't unusual for Ottawa and surrounding areas at this time of the year. Even -25 °C is something most people who live in the region would be expecting and prepared to experience at various points throughout a typical winter.
- Rendello 5y agoIt's been an unusually chilly January: https://twitter.com/YOW_Weather https://twitter.com/YOW_Weather Which is surprising, as the Rideau Canal opened for skating quite late this year.
- ACalgaryMan 5y agoWas there perhaps a typo in this? >-10 °C isn't unusual for Ottawa The parent comment was measuring in Fahrenheit >Current temps are -10 °F Conversion for the metric people: -10 °F is -23 °C
- armagon 5y agoI've heard reports of tens of thousands of trucks. It's a shame the highway cameras were turned off. I see claimed that the Ontario Provincial Police say there are 100k to 130k trucks, but I can't see anything official to back that up -- nothing on their twitter feed or website. Maybe on the radio -- but not something I can easily check. Here's someone on the ground who thinks there are 250k to 1 million people protesting in Ottawa right now. https://twitter.com/JuliusRuechel/status/1487570992356634625?s=20&t=S3tfFCpecU-iJoU_3zGDdg https://twitter.com/JuliusRuechel/status/1487570992356634625...
- Lamad123 5y agoGovernments would use any chance to undermine peoplekind rights
- umvi 5y agoWhy do truckers have vaccine mandates? They are sitting alone in a truck 99% of the time...
- version_five 5y agoCanadas government wants to punish people that don't want to be vaccinated, for political gain. The connection between rules and public health was lost a long time ago. These are all just populist measures to solicit votes. We have one of the worlds highest vaccination rates, and where rates are highest, the rules constantly get more strict. Don't think for a second Canadian politicians are making these (illegal) rules because of public health. Long ago, Canadians have voluntarily complied with all advice in high enough percentages that the rest is is meaningless.
- zht 5y agosorry are you saying that the US imposing vaccine requirements for truckers is also the US government wanting to punish people?
- ipaddr 5y agoThe US has their own reasons. Part of it is some people see others who didn't take the vaccine as amoral or the reason why things are still locked down. Those people need to be punished some believe. Many have been feed partial truths and political leaders have used this to deflect blame and place it on a minority population. The smaller the minority the harsher the treatment.
- bsder 5y ago> Part of it is some people see others who didn't take the vaccine as amoral or the reason why things are still locked down. Well, anti-vax people ARE part of the problem why things are still locked down as anti-vax people are currently taking up most of the critical hospital capacity. > Those people need to be punished some believe. From my personal experience, on the anti-vax side we have a wife who watched her husband die from Covid but still won't get herself OR HER SON the vaccine. If we change the words from Republican Trumper to Christian Scientist, suddenly the exact same people think it's okay to throw people in jail for these kinds of beliefs. At this point, Omicron is solving our anti-vax problem. I feel sorry for those who can't get vaccinated. I've had Covid before vaccines (that sucked and continues to suck in many ways) and I got vaccinated as well. But I, personally, can't do anything more. At this point it looks like by the end of February, Omicron will have burned through everybody, and we can get back to normal. And so it goes.
- totony 5y ago>But police say they are concerned about how the convoy has attracted extremist rhetoric Blame the government for that. They need a scapegoat so hard for their failure to plan & react to the pandemic that they villainize groups like this and try to ostracize them (e.g. trudeau & al saying they are a fringe group - saying that since 90% of people are vaccinated they agree to the mandates, which is a false dichotomy. If you force someone to do something you can't say "well you did it so you agree it's necessary"). What did they expect would happen to those they voluntarily ostracize? I've seen a lot of reasonable people that just didn't think the vaccine was worth it to them be pushed into very fringe views out of being cornered by the ruling class.
- version_five 5y agoYeah I voluntarily got vaccinated, before anyone was talking about mandates, and I never considered they would actually happen in a free country. If I'd thought that getting a vaccine (that I didn't really see as vital for me) was an implicit endorsement of authoritarian policies about requiring to show you've taken it to participate in daily life, I maybe would have reconsidered. If we were only 50% vaccinated here, the government may have thought twice about excluding so many people from society. It's ridiculous that voluntarily taking a medicine (a good thing to do) gets turned into an excuse for authoritarian rule
- fooster 5y agoAuthoritarian rule? Firstly mostly they’re arguing about provincial legislation to the federal government. Secondly vaccinations are already mandatory in most provinces to attend school and for most health care jobs. Stop with the hyperbole.
- totony 5y agoUnacceptable provincial legislations are federal matters. That has always been the case and is why the supreme court is federal. So it makes sense to protest in ottawa when overreach is suspected (esp since this seems like a human rights matter and is federal jurisdiction). Provinces in Canada have way less power than states in the US
- freddealmeida 5y agoI personally enjoy that the politicians are surprised at how easily it was to shut down the capital. And how difficult it would be to fight this with a military or police response (though it is early). Their fear though is delicious. PM Trudeau has run away from the Capital it seems (his office is not stating his whereabouts) and that image is just lovely.

- refurb 5y agoYou’re comparing peaceful Canadians protesting to an active shooter who broke into Parliament? And as a fellow Canadian, I can say I’m glad there are still some Canadians with the sand to stand up for what they believe in.
- mthoms 5y agoAre you in a position to know what intelligence Ottawa Police and the RCMP have on emergent threats?
- refurb 5y agoHas there been any official statement? Or is it so super secret they can’t even mention it? Seems like an odd thing to bring up with no proof. And even if they did say that, it’s like the talking heads on CNN - the former intelligence folks from the CIA. “There is evidence of Russian collusion in our election. Proof? Well, it’s a matter of national security so I cant share any details. But trust me! I’ve seen the proof and it’s damming!” That’s exactly what got us into the 2nd Gulf War. “Trust the government, they wouldn’t lie.” No thanks.
- moistly 5y agoHow embarrassing. Canada did not get into the second gulf war. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada_and_the_Iraq_War https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada_and_the_Iraq_War
- jorgesborges 5y agoMy interest in this stems primarily from the dissonance between the way this impending parade of doom was portrayed by the media and how it’s manifesting. I expected a fringe group of extremists as Trudeau warned when in fact Canadians around the country are gathering peacefully in protest. In my small liberal city on the opposite end of the country I saw families walking around with flags smiling and in support. It made me ask what sort of dystopian echo chamber I must be in to have had such a disparity between expectation and reality. And now I see people drawing attention to a nazi flag and the desecration of a Terry Fox statue (draping it in a Canadian flag with a sign that says mandate freedom). Okay so one person brought a nazi flag and there’s some Trump supporters. Is that really what’s important here? The majority of protesters don’t seem like crazy anti-vax confederates but rather wish to communicate that they’re unhappy with covid measures and mandates. Am I missing something?
- VancouverMan 5y agoThis isn't a new problem with the Canadian mass media. It has been like this for a while. It has just become far more blatant within the past decade than it was in the past. CBC News has gotten particularly bad.
- Zombieball 5y ago> Am I missing something? There’s numerous videos pouring in of individuals going into local businesses to harass and threaten employees while flaunting they aren’t wearing masks. These individuals likely don’t represent the majority. But it doesn’t feel like just a few bad apples.
- refurb 5y agoI wonder if the CBC will pull a CNN, a la “Firey but mostly peaceful protest”? I’m betting on “no”. They’ll seek out the fringe and ignore the majority, report innuendo and rumor as fact, and try and paint the whole movement as “racists, alt-right, anti-science” all the while ignoring all the evidence it’s not. If some participant is interviewed and sounds articulate, with rationale concerns about government policy, that’ll be left on the cutting room floor.
- manishsharan 5y ago
- bigodbiel 5y agoJust because one is vaccinated does not mean they support mandates. Many were forcibly vaccinated, never having an option. This is a false dichotomy that since 90% are vaccinated, 90% approve vaccine mandates.

- moistly 5y agoOmicron is waning rapidly. The pandemic will soon end. Which is why these protests are happening now: wait any longer and the opportunity to grift will have slipped by. The far right groups that organized this made serious bank on this. $8M in GoFundMe, to be spent on socially-destructive separatist messaging.

- refurb 5y agoExactly we should just bite our tongue and wait for our dear leaders to tell us when it’s safe to go outside again. To even question that is “an unacceptable viewpoint” to quote Justin Trudeau. Just sit down, shut up and the government will tell you when and what to do. Wait for further instruction.
- moistly 5y agoBut you see, throughout this entire pandemic I’ve mostly ignored the government and instead listened to epidemiologists, kept my eye on ICU rates, and governed myself accordingly. And by doing so I’ve been out to dine, gathered in friends’ homes, visited my parents, go shopping, and generally lived my life unimpeded. Oh, and I’ve also avoided supporting the turds who organized this latest rally and grift: https://www.antihate.ca/the_freedom_convoy_is_nothing_but_a_vehicle_for_the_far_right https://www.antihate.ca/the_freedom_convoy_is_nothing_but_a_.... I can be proud of everything I’ve done during the pandemic. Can’t say the same for the people who were out there pissing on a soldier’s grave, waving the swastika, fighting hotel and restaurant staff, blocking emergency response vehicles, stealing food from the homeless, and keeping their fellow citizens awake all night with their horn-blowing.
