We may have left a lander on the moon, but the Soviets put cameras on Venus. Checkmate.
- readthenotes1 5y agoNah. That's merely good work. STS-107-Space Shuttle Columbia, that's checkmate.
- marcodiego 5y agoSoviet Union fans are probably very proud of Soyuz safety record.
- twelve40 5y agoWhat's that got to do with Venus landings?
- pastacacioepepe 5y agoNothing. The statement reeks of capitalist/american fragility. People can't tolerate the idea that capitalism isn't the absolute best choice in completely every aspect of our lives.
- aenis 5y agoI think USSR fans generally dont care about safety. Its assumed there will be casaulties, the end justifies the means. One needs to either spend some time in Russia, or know Russians well to appreciate how much this influences everyday life in their country.
- sedan_baklazhan 5y agoThis is very wrong. Neither USSR nor Russia really did/do think this way as a general rule. Human life is valued a lot.
- echelon 5y agoI'll raise you James Webb, OSIRIS-REx, Ingenuity, Curiosity, Perseverance, New Horizons, Juno, Cassini, and the burgeoning private space industry. Not that we're competing. (And if we are, this is the very best kind.)
- zardo 5y agoThe Soviet Union has achieved very little since 1991.
- BitwiseFool 5y agoThe wit of this comment is underappreciated.
- FpUser 5y agoLOL. USSR had ceased to exist in 1991.

- elteto 5y agoYou could even call it a Soviet reUnion...
- chasil 5y agoWe should invite all the major players for genuine science.

- el_nahual 5y agoThere's a funny (?) joke about this: First satellite: USSR First animal in space: USSR First person in space: USSR First woman in space: USSR First space walk: USSR First space station: USSR First photos from another planet: USSR First person on the moon: USA Stop the count! Winner of the space race: USA
- kingcharles 5y ago9) First car on Mars: Tesla 10) Profit??
- severak_cz 5y agoquoting Wikipedia: > The Roadster is in a heliocentric orbit that crosses the orbit of Mars and reaches a distance of 1.66 au from the Sun.[6] With an inclination of roughly 1 degree to the ecliptic plane, compared to Mars' 1.85° inclination, this trajectory by design cannot intercept Mars, so the car will neither fly by Mars nor enter an orbit around Mars. - seanmcdirmid 5y agoHow many countries have landed probes on Mars? If you are going to stop space history at the end of the 60s, I guess the achievements of the 70s aren’t that important to you?
- jbay808 5y agoTurns out that the first soft landing on Mars was also by the USSR, in 1971. Who knew?
- seanmcdirmid 5y agoYes, the probe lasted almost 20 seconds after landing. Who knew?
