Somewhere in the middle are those who don’t like changes, but aren’t bothered enough about it to jump ship.
Interesting and deliberate choice of words. There are also a lot more people in the middle who appreciate the design choices of systemd but hate the way it was forced on the community.
I know Covid is divisive, but it really is relevant.
So many of us agreed with cases like Zucht v. King in the past. Public schools were a great example of a critical institution where vaccination is so important. Polio is such a great example of science winning.
And education.
And yes, obviously some needed the force of legal backing. But the drama now is unbelievable.
But Covid, like systemd, feels different. It feels more like they didn't rely on educating people, but wanted to test their control capabilities.
It completely changes the relationship with the Linux community. And it indicates it's not a one-off event, but a pattern in how they see people.
Of course, you need to swallow your pride, not shoot yourself in the foot, and accept it without complaining.
It's just, after a lot of things like this, it begins to feel like a really different thing, something much darker you wouldn't want to put others through.
It changes the relationship. Not just among big distro companies, but among citizens. And not in a good way. In a way that really is uncomfortable.
- tadfisher 5y agoThe way I see it: in both cases, people with decision-making power made decisions, in keeping with established precedent and aiming for a desired outcome. Also in both cases, a minority of those not involved in the decision-making process have raised bad-faith arguments and managed to convince the rest of the world that there is a controversy in how the decisions were made and carried out, and that the decision-making power should never have been delegated in the first place.
- raxxorrax 5y agoWhat about those that did make argument in good faith? To attribute bad faith to an argument would not fly in any serious discussion. Isn't the topic serious enough? (Moreso covid than systemd).
