We are in 'the age of artificial islands'
- aurizon 5y agoThere is no real reason we can not make any number of floating islands. The danger is of making them unstable, and without leaks AND to have a way to remove biomass growth from time to time.Waves need to be dealt with so the island has the strentth to act as a bridge/beam as waves pass under = cyclic bending stresses if your island was 500 feet square and2 peaks 400 feet apart lifted 2 ends. You could make them in small panels, with hinges, or a strong square beam. They could be daisy chained for miles with hinges every 100-200 feet. Barnacles and sea grass can build up to huge weights = strip the sides and bottoms as needed. You have the ability to make them 50-250 feet deep, better make sure that never ever leak and to CYA make them in sealed cubes in case one sinks, the other would float. Right now it is not economic, but you could save a number of low lying islands by making them a floating countries, sure = costly, but losing the country underwater is also costly. Large floating sea farms can be made with narrow floating causeways with farmed tanks (with or without bottoms). You would need to control waste and diseases and parasites that often infest sea farms. I think the next 200 years will be a golden age of sea farms and other habitats.
