A data ‘black hole’: Europol ordered to delete vast store of personal data
- raxxorrax 5y agoThis is a scandal and Europol legitimacy is questionable as it is. The situation is even worse than in the US because the US has some checks and balances, even if those fail due to a lack of public interest. Europol is just the enforcer of the commission without there being any reliable tool to keep overreaches in check. Even this watchdog cannot work independently. > The confrontation pits the EU data protection watchdog against a powerful security agency being primed to become the centre of machine learning and AI in policing. Come on Guardian, you don't really believe this yourself, do you? I don't see the EU succeeding in the long term. I have the urge to leave if I hadn't responsibilities here, carefully weighting that other venues aren't perfect either. But it is an old, restrictive and fearful construct that will behave predictably, but not in a desirable way.
