FAQ: Norton Crypto
- dtx1 5y agoYet another good reason to lie when a company asks me to install virus scanner to access their corporate network from my linux system.
- moasda 5y agoFrom article: "The coin mining fee is currently 15% of the crypto allocated to the miner." Malware scanners become malware.
- boring_twenties 5y ago15% is just straight up daylight robbery. Shockingly brazen. For comparison XMRig's default developer donation is 5% and can easily be changed to 1%. (It's open source of course, so only slightly less easily changed to 0.)
- brutal_chaos_ 5y agoI'm anticipating an, "oops, we didn't mean to enable this by default; thanks for your compute time. Apply for a rebate [here]." notice at some point...
- jf 5y agoI was ready to dislike this on principle, but was surprised to find myself slightly interested in the product. What’s a good way to get started with CPU mining Etherium?
- gus_massa 5y agoThe first step is to know the price of electricity where you live.
- jazzyjackson 5y agoFrom TFA: > Hardware requirements: Graphics card - Nvidia cards with minimum 6 GB memory See also this stackexchange showing how unprofitable it is to burn CPU cycles for ETH [0], a GPU is 40x as efficient wrt hashes per kWh. - RinTohsaka 5y agoCheck out cpu mining Monero instead! https://xmrig.com/ https://xmrig.com/
- nacs 5y agoJust in case Norton bloat isn't slowing your computer down enough with all their system "protection", you can now make your system even slower with crypto! I can't wait to see hackers exploiting Norton installs to steal Ethereum from Windows computers en-masse...
- hammyhavoc 5y agoImagine being someone who wants to do that, then going to work at Norton to make sure your malware doesn't get shitlisted. Perfect plan on paper, and consumers will never suspect one of the people meant to protect them.
- Zerverus 5y ago
- rootsudo 5y agoAnd this went largely unnoticed by most of the online community.
- yellowapple 5y agoWho in their right mind asked for this?
- Demcox 5y agoI keep forgetting software like Norton actually stil exists. Being remindede by news that they implemented is f*cking hilarious.
- challenger-derp 5y agoWould be curious as to what the rationale for this feature is. Presumably Norton's goal is to be good at protecting clients' machines from undesirable activity. And being good at this does not necessarily require them to be good at mining. Would Norton rather crypto hobbyists mine with them (reputation, legitimacy) than with software & partners with sketchier backgrounds? If so, this does seem like an reasonable, albeit unusual, feature.
- DonBarredora 5y agoNorton should just cease to exist.
- cuteboy19 5y agoWhy can't Microsoft just send a popup saying "Defender is the only Antivirus you'll ever need". They do the same for promoting Edge all the time.
- skarz 5y agoUnless you're totally raw-dogging the internet, Windows Defender is all you need. Stop paying Norton and MacAfee to use your computer without your permission.
