It's a bit bizarre to complain about the pipe symbol IMNHO (as a user of Norwegian kbd layout, where åæø/ÆØÅ takes up prime estate) - without pipe you can't use a posix shell at all - so if you're on a layout without pipe, it's not like you likely could use any languages outside Smalltalk/Self, or possibly Pascal... That said, yes, I think there's room for languages with very limited use of special characters. But I think they'd always be somewhat specialized. Like Markdown.
