Where are all the jobs for bad programmers with CS degrees?
That sounds like a joke... but by Hacker News community standards I'm sure more than half of CS graduates would be considered mediocre programmers at best. The big companies would never try to train these kids - they just lobby for more H1Bs.
How else do you explain stories like this while we have a "talent shortage":

- mtinkerhess 15y agoMy impression is that there are plenty of jobs for relatively mediocre programmers—just not the kinds of jobs that HN readers tend to aspire to. Someone has to write enterprise CRUD apps on a .NET or Java stack for large non-software companies, and they don't have to be rockstars.
- aninteger 15y agoSadly, even companies that create .net crud apps only want the rockstar programmers. Or at least that's the way it seems in Los Angeles. I'm speaking from experience although perhaps I'm just a mediocre software developer.
- pagekalisedown 15y agoRockstars and / or Ninjas. </sarcasm>
- jshen 15y agoMost are mediocre because they simply don't give a crap about the craft of software. Training doesn't fix that. The software world moves fast and you have to love it, or have serious discipline, to keep up.
- aangjie 15y agoThanks, i realized i don't love software in that sense to keep up with it at the pace it moves. Your comment was the seed crystal to trigger the crystallization.
