The only Christmas tradition I care about is Sweden’s arson goat
- joezydeco 5y agoIf you watch the video, that poor goat went up in less than a minute. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jge6uzRl-k https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jge6uzRl-k Isn't there some way to treat the straw to slow it down or stop it from catching fire? Or does that mess with the tradition?
- klondike_ 5y agoThey already coat it with fireproofing material, but it tends to wash off when it's wet. Also, a hot enough fire will just burn through it anyways
- t0mas88 5y agoI think the organisers don't really want the tradition. They put fences, cameras, asked the police etc.
- joezydeco 5y agoI do admire the constant optimism of "yeah, maybe this year it won't happen"
- Mountain_Skies 5y agoThey've done various levels of fireproofing it over the years but it discolors the straw so the more they put on, the safer it is but the uglier it looks.
- JoeAltmaier 5y agoSatisfy everyone: make burning the goat, part of the celebration!
- yesenadam 5y agoAww where's the fun in that?
- Mountain_Skies 5y agoIf you want to participate in your own small version of this tradition, IKEA sells them.
- jonathantf2 5y agoMy favourite thing about this is that the Wikipedia article has a list of all of the years since 1966 and if it survived or not. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%A4vle_goat#Timeline https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%A4vle_goat#Timeline
- somedude895 5y agoHighly entertaining, thanks. It's not all fun and games apparently, two years prison is a long time: > The goat was stolen by a man, who then placed it in his backyard. He was later sentenced to two years in prison for aggravated theft. Also, this made me chuckle: > On 13 December fire crews responded to a call that the 'little goat' was burning, only to discover it was in fact a miniature Yule goat somebody had brought and torched at the scene.
- ChrisArchitect 5y agoha, this thing -- I forgot I was following the twitter account from last year and then all of a sudden this month it starts tweeting again and I'm fine with the sorta cute festive goat pics popping up again. Forgot about the whole burning part tho! wild! haha
