GPT-3 APIs are now in public beta
- Traubenfuchs 5y agoWhat the hell is their problem? Why not sell it in an mostly uncontrolled fashion to maximize revenue, marketshare, fame, economy of scale, etc.? I am offended by the idea of people being scared of text produced by AI, text that is ultimately inferior to text produced by professional humans.

Obviously if you train it on hate speech, it will spit out really soul crushing stuff. You have to bake in healthy discourse to it for it to really shine.
- someguydave 5y agoBecause gpt3 is likely to make statements which imply that people of different races and sexes act differently. Some people define those kinds of statements as “harmful”
- friedman23 5y agoThis is cool but I'm hesitant to invest any real amount of time building something on this. How do I know that if I build something massively successful they wont shut off my access and build a competitor?
- arcastroe 5y agoif you build something massively successful (with recurring revenue), you should be able to switch to one of the similar open-source models and even host it yourself. GPT-Neo and GPT-J may not be as large as GPT-3, but I think GPT-Jurassic rivals it (I'm not sure if the jurassic model is released to the public, maybe someone else with more knowledge can comment)

- echelon 5y agoThat's horrible! Why would anyone build anything with OpenAI when they can shut you down so wantonly? Is there a writeup on this?
- TulliusCicero 5y agoDunno about a write up, but out of the ashes of AI Dungeon, NovelAI was born. - schleck8 5y agoHow is an encrypted string supposed to be fed to a transformer network?
- DavidSJ 5y agoI suppose the parent might mean that the stories are encrypted while at rest, but not that their generation itself is encrypted, which indeed would be rather difficult.
- TulliusCicero 5y agoIt’s only encrypted locally right before being sent to the cloud to be saved. While that does mean it’s unencrypted locally, if it was still being transmitted unencrypted I think someone would’ve noticed by now.
- Al-Khwarizmi 5y agoWait, what happened to AI Dungeon? It seems to still be working. Are they using some other model instead of GPT now?
- yepDidThat2 5y agoYou don't know. Ask the countless iOS developers who gave thousands of dollars only to be rejected. Or banned because they want a monopoly on a type of App. I've moved completely to open source, at least you don't need to worry about losing access.
- rvz 5y agoThis is why it makes no sense in the long term to build and entire business on top of someone else's API, only for them to shut it down or ban it if they want to. The best outcome if one was going to do that is to sell the business off immediately.
- mellosouls 5y agoConsidering OpenAI's notorious history of apparently pivoting 180 to Closed (see HN references ad nauseum), you might be wise to be hesitant. This is perhaps an organisation with more fame than trust.

- anyfactor 5y agoFreaking platform risk!! I lost 8 months of my life on 2 projects. One was using robinhood's unofficial API and the other one was Discord's. So now my whole goal is to built stuff from the ground up.

- tiborsaas 5y agoDon't build serious stuff on other people's API if it's a single point of failure. If you can afford to throw it away easily, then it's fine for fun experiments. They could probably build a competitor even if you had your own model running.
- fenomas 5y agoLooks neat, but note that OpenAI is basically an App Store model - whatever you make with it cannot be shown to more than five people unless OpenAI has reviewed and explicitly approved your project. - zitterbewegung 5y agoYea, this made me look to alternatives and I mainly use Huggingface instead. I don't want to wake up one day and learn that a side project got rejected by a higher power and I have to write a HN post to get my account unlocked.

- jfoster 5y agoWhich can be substituted by any other computing platform that has the necessary function for your application. As long as one exists, you're good to go. (possibly none exist yet) The brand name doesn't count for anything unless you, as an application developer, decide to assign some value to it.
- vorpalhex 5y agoSeveral clones of GPT-3 exist, a few successors that may be a bit better, and even a few leaks of gpt-3 itself.

I'm still on the lookout for cheaper alternatives though
- rasengan 5y agoThe GPT-3 Playground is a powerful oracle. You can start a prompt like "XXXXXX is" and it will answer it for you.
- starklevnertz 5y agoLots of talk in the comments about the restrictions on gpt3. The reason is that gpt3 has a Jekyll and Hyde personality and can be extremely rude, offensive and unkind. They’re trying to control that because the evil side is very bad publicity for gpt3.
- kreeben 5y agoI recall OpenAI openly stating that they don't trust us to do non-nefarious things with their APIs and that's why they've been restricted. You're saying it's because their AI is an asshole?
- starklevnertz 5y agoCan be an asshole sometimes. Quite a lot actually. If you ask it to respond in a conversation about …. well pretty much any nasty topic you can think of, it’ll join in whole heartedly. Hard to think of how prevent that. I bet they’ve thought alot about the problem. How do you prevent AI being an A grade jerk.

Invent synthetic consciousness and ask it to be nice, easy :) I'm only half joking, we probably all have thoughts ranging from bad to horrible, but we just don't say them because we are aware of the consequences. Language models aren't aware so they'll spit out the most likely combination of words. If there would be a process to limit these or try again, it could act as a filter, but I think that requires it to be self aware.

- globalise83 5y agoShame about the terms of service, because I had a plan to set up a "romantic hotline" on a premium number which would combine GPT-3 text generation with the Chrome text-to-speech API.

- favourable 5y agoAnyone know something similar to GPT but isn't really 'AI' but more a blackbox algorithm that you don't have to train, and can spit out blogposts given a few bits of initial input? For example, let's say I wanted to generate an article about 'why the sky is blue'. Couldn't I just say to the program: 'Yes, use Wikipedia as reference material', 'Include 3-4 images with captions too', etc I imagine such a tool is in use, it's just not possible to know what bloggers use it, since such a tool could be abused to create blogspam on a scale never seen before. In other words: with great power comes great responsibility.
- msapaydin 5y agoI think Salesforce has such a model. It is called CTRL. Have never tried using it though. It accepts metadata to generate text conditionally on that metadata such as domain of text.

- TruthWillHurt 5y agoWelcome to the end of the internet as we know it, where affiliate marketers and ad sites generate content to flood search engines with results, rendering it near impossible to find quality content.
- schleck8 5y agoSadly you are probably right. Hidden affiliate marketers are the parasites of search results and of the internet in general
- mark_l_watson 5y agoI have had access to GPT-3 for a long while now, and I love it. I updated my Common Lisp and Clojure books with client examples (you can get free copies at https://leanpub.com/u/markwatson https://leanpub.com/u/markwatson by sliding the price scale to “free”). The code generation is sometimes very impressive, it does a great job at abstractive summarization, I have been having fun by letting it help me write a sci-fi story, etc. Definitely check it out. I have been working with neural networks since the 1980s (DARPA NN Tools advisory panel for a year, commercial applications) and it pleases me greatly to see that deep learning models being part of my engineering stack. I wrote a macOS app for the App Store that uses two DL models, and it is difficult to imagine any company functioning without ML.

"Allison is excited to meet with New Horizon Manufacturing to discuss their photovoltaic window system." should be "Allison is excited to meet with New Horizon Manufacturing to discuss OUR photovoltaic window system."
- cptcobalt 5y agoThere's lots of comments about other GPT variants here (GPT Neo, GPT-J, Huggingface, etc), but a big part of the GPT-3 allure for me as a tinkerer is an easy access to an API that I can pay for (since, with all my experiments over a few months, I've spent about $30, which is totally within bounds of fun experimentation) Are there actually any public APIs available for models I don't need to run locally on my machine, that perhaps are slightly more permissive than the openai usage guidelines? (FWIW, I mostly use curie, so I'd be happy with a ~10B model)
