Very sensible and extensive input, garbagecoder, thank you very much.
I do think IQ itself is a lacking approximation of intelligence, but the larger problem is that the data is probably highly distorted. Also some with the same potential as another but who has never been challenged with these type of questions will perform worse. You will get better at IQ tests the more of them you do. It is questionable that your IQ increases.
Granted, that problem is understood and addressed and you should not do the same test with the same type of questions again. But creating such tests is probably beyond the IQ of anyone.
Also IQ tests are highly tuned to speed. While having unlimited time to solve questions doesn't say much about cognitive abilities, people with quicker judgments don't necessarily have better ones, often to the contrary. But the form of questions in IQ tests favors them disproportionately because every question itself all have a very limited scope and the measurement is about how many answers you get correct in a limited timeframe.
- johntdaly 5y ago"people with quicker judgments don't necessarily have better ones" I totally agree with you here. For example Ben Shapiro is a smart guy and a quick thinker. He has a lot of good points but I would never fully trust his reasoning without checking it. Being a quick thinker doesn’t make you a thorough thinker but it does allow you to look good while steamrolling anybody who thinks slower than you.
- garbagecoder 5y agog is as close to a measurable thing in psychology as there is and anti-IQ articles are almost always driven by political or moral concerns. Sure, IQ is flawed. Most measures are. There's really not much more to say. If you prefer walls of text to a short answer that conveys everything I just said, then good for you, but I'm not sure it's something to tut tut your superiority about. After all, isn't that the problem with IQ?
