Hopefully this gets upvoted more but it somewhat repairs my view of Ubiquiti's brand now that more details have come out about what actually happened. I hope the courts will determine the full extent of the truth
- jolux 5y agoAren't they still serial and uncaring GPL violators?
- colechristensen 5y agoJust being practical here: who isn’t? That is companies that sell hardware with gpl code that actually respect the gpl well.
- jolux 5y agoMy $50 TP-Link router came with a card in the box explaining their GPL compliance and giving me a link to their changes. I would think if I'm going to blow hundreds on Ubiquiti gear, they could at least match TP-Link when it comes to actually following the law.
- bogwog 5y agoSource for this?
- jolux 5y agoLatest I can find is this thread: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21450944 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21450944 I’m not sure if it’s still ongoing, that’s why I asked if it was.
- MertsA 5y agoMy comment from back then stands. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21451666 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21451666 There's also some random community post here: https://community.amplifi.com/topic/3296/gpl-source-code-availability https://community.amplifi.com/topic/3296/gpl-source-code-ava... They're still in flagrant violation of the license for all the software they're stealing.
- fomine3 5y agoIIRC FCC disallow to open radio related source even though it's GPL. I don't know Ubnt opens other sources.
- oaiey 5y agoYou can assume that from 99% of all device vendors. It is a shame but it is a reality. That is not something I would put on Ubiquti especially considering all their other serious flaws in product management.
- clajiness 5y ago> it somewhat repairs my view of Ubiquiti's brand It shouldn't. Everything I read still speaks to their toxic culture and their inability to focus on a product before releasing 10 new ones. I buy their switches and APs, but their routers are still garbage.
- Arainach 5y agoWhat's the better set-it-and-forget-it alternative? The Dream Machine Pro has been truly wonderful for me. I'm not interested in the equivalent of "a totally customizable Linux box running pfSense".
- liketochill 5y agoMikrotik?
- Arainach 5y agoIf the top result for "Mikrotik configuration" is accurate: https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/display/ROS/First+Time+Configuration https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/display/ROS/First+Time+Config... Then no thanks. I have a finite number of hours on this planet and I have no interest in spending more of them trying to configure network equipment with commands like ``` /ip firewall filter add chain=forward action=fasttrack-connection connection-state=established,related \ comment="fast-track for established, related"; add chain=forward action=accept connection-state=established,related \ comment="accept established, related"; add chain=forward action=drop connection-state=invalid add chain=forward action=drop connection-state=new connection-nat-state=!dstnat \ in-interface=ether1 comment="drop access to clients behind NAT form WAN" ``` Ubiquiti does a great job of having good defaults out of the box, a straightforward UI, and remote management. I could walk my mother through setting up Unifi equipment over the phone and even get so far as to grant remote access to me without ever leaving it in an insecure state. I wouldn't get past setting an IP address in the Mikrotik section before losing that.
