Free speech has won another victory at Cambridge
- version_five 5y agoOf course he should be allowed to speak, censorship or "cancellation" has no place in a free society. More realistically though, from both sides 1. Censoring people creates martyrs out of people that shouldn't be martyrs. It's much better to let them do their thing and give them enough rope to hang themselves with, especially if your think their view is so bad 2. A figure like Jordan Peterson not being censored is a pretty hollow victory. Just because he can talk, doesnt mean he's worth listening to, and often people like this do more harm than good for their cause by being inflammatory and being a target for opponents to say "look at what these people believe". I'd rather have attention drawn to a more moderate voice / version of his cause, even if I generally agree with it. Celebrity contrarians can get lots of attention for themselves but make sure their causes remain in the fringe.
- nradov 5y agoWhat is Jordan Peterson's cause? I thought he was mainly trying to publicize his latest book.
- argiopetech 5y agoI don't think the cause matters, personally; however, it appears he was invited by faculty at Cambridge. I take this less as a victory for Peterson, and more as a victory for Cambridge faculty who were being denied use of University facilities to host a visiting academician.
