Unfortunately those high ranking officials included the WHO, which was in denial for many months.
- phone8675309 5y agoI'm not sure they were in denial as much as not wanting to piss off China.
- blago 5y agoI don't think China had any preference on whether the world was going to wear masks. Let's not vilify them too much. This has nothing to do with the origin of the virus which is the only topic that seems to make them touchy.
- SV_BubbleTime 5y agoIt’s not exactly freakenomics to point out how many masks are made in China though.
- blago 5y agoThe GP was suggesting that China was somehow opposed to wearing masks.
- nitrogen 5y agoI think it's more that they were suggesting that an aggressive response to COVID19 would have appeared to be an anti-China move, and thus further jeopardize the US relationship with China.
- maxerickson 5y agoPandering to China wasn't a particular priority of the US government at the time. Is the idea that mask policy would make up for all the politicians calling it "the China virus"?
- Eelongate 5y agoWHO isn't part of the US government though.
- maxerickson 5y agoThe other commenter brought in the US relationship with China. I agree my comment doesn't reply to stuff higher up in the thread.

- khazhoux 5y agoAnd unfortunately, due to politics, we have (in the USA) half the nation thinking that the top health and government officials were/are wrong about absolutely everything (including vaccines), and the other half of the nation thinks that the top officials got everything exactly right (and refuse to question what could have been handled better). So California looks at Florida in horror, even though COVID just keeps on truckin' through Cali. And Florida screams that a mask is history's greatest threat to liberty, even though it's a plain and obvious way to reduce transmission.
- dragonwriter 5y ago> So California looks at Florida in horror, even though COVID just keeps on truckin' through Cali. California’s recent COVID death rate per 100K population is 2/3 Floridas, and the COVID incidence is concentrated in the counties with Florida-like attitudes.
- nradov 5y agoNow adjust for risk based on population age differences and see how the difference between states looks.
- gowld 5y agoNow adjust based on vaccination status
- dragonwriter 5y ago> Now adjust for risk based on population age differences and see how the difference between states looks. About what you’d expect if the actual recent infection rates were similar after Florida's drop from its mich higher recent peak, rather than Florida's being now much lower the way the reported case rates would suggest.
- labster 5y agoThere is still coronavirus in California, but mostly in the flyover counties. The high population centers are much safer.
