VSCode Adds Notebook Support
- siproprio 5y agoHave they removed github's spying capabilities yet? Last time I looked at this, vscode was leaking private data that should not be collected and processed inadvertently.
- willmorrison 5y agoCould just use Code - OSS that removes telemetry.
- jjeaff 5y agoNot a fan of that name. Makes it difficult to find information about it. Can you use all the regular vs code extensions with "Code" that you can use with "VS Code"? For the record, I'm also annoyed at the naming of Visual Studio Code. Not to be confused with Visual Studio which is a completely different IDE.
- willmorrison 5y agoNot a fan of the name either. Yes, you can use all of the normal extensions. It's the same thing without telemetry.
- siproprio 5y ago> It's the same thing without telemetry It's not. The vscode team purposefully breaks services and plugins that microsoft considers "strategic".
- siproprio 5y agoMicrosoft purposefully broke Vscodium.

- copperx 5y agoDoes anybody here use Notebooks for non-data science things? They look like a potential candidate for personal notes.
- wodenokoto 5y agoIt’s also great for writing/developing tutorials because you can easily mix rich text, code and results of code. I’d say they are great for any exploratory task, and doubly so if that exploration ends with a write up of the findings. That’s very often needed in any kind of data analytics, which is why notebooks are spearheaded by data science use cases.
- sporedro 5y agoEmacs org-mode allows taking notes and having code blocks you can execute in the notes. As someone who doesn’t use emacs though, I personally would love to see something like that with markdown/latex/notebooks. I guess you can already sorta do it with Jupyter and things like this. Would be interesting for a more note-oriented tool to do this though.
- teruakohatu 5y agoNotebooks are for the most part markdown with embedded executable code snippets. Outside of datascience they can be used for exploring API's, databases, prototyping libraries etc. But for general note taking, markdown would be better.
- powersnail 5y agoTried it, not particularly useful. Notebooks are code with embedded markdown blocks; it shines when you want to run the code in the notes. Otherwise, it has no more feature than a regular plain text file, only more formatting boilerplates.
- bitwize 5y agoI wrote a BASIC interpreter in literate org-mode Scheme once. I find it helpful to organize my thoughts in notes, add code, and turn that code into a working program via "tangling".

- seumars 5y agoIf I had the time I would try out the notebook API to make a simple node.js notebook. There's one alternative that works great but is too bloated to my liking: https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=donjayamanne.typescript-notebook https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=donjayam...
- ossusermivami 5y agonot the same audience but I use org mode and its org-babel functionality for that and it's great!
