- beebeepka 5y agoI have several domain names that I am not using but you're right
- 8eye 5y agoi have like 10 but i agree as well
- biztos 5y agoI have more than 10 but I also agree. I’m not squatting, I have a plan for each one, and the threat of losing them would be a great motivator to actually build all these little projects! OTOH there would probably just be “not squatting” services just like there were/are “under construction” landing pages.
- wccrawford 5y agoThe threat of losing my domains would cause me not to register them in the first place, which would hamper little people like me with small ideas, but probably not actually hurt squatters much since they'd be actively protecting their investments.
- exporectomy 5y agoYou want to replace highest bidder wins with first in first served? Is that really better? How? This sounds like naive market manipulation, which ends up being whack-a-mole or just a disastrous mess.
- 02020202 5y agoi agree but then you have the email where you might not need the web at all.
- mojuba 5y agoDomain squatting is like a disease, but how would you regulate it? Where is the line between just a parked domain that a lot of tech (and non-tech) people reserve for their future projects, and a domain acquired for re-sale? Given a good offer you would probably sell one of the domains you own just as well, wouldn't you?
- amelius 5y agoHow are trademarks registered? Why not use the same procedure for domain names?
- deusex_ 5y agoBecause this puts an individual with limited resources at a great disadvantage to corporations
- KeepFlying 5y agoExcept trademarks are only unique within a specific industry in a specific country. In the case of Delta Airlines and Delta Faucets for example who would get to have "delta.com"? Then what about all the other countries with independent trademark rules and authorities? I like the idea, but it would end up being way more complex than it seems.
- amelius 5y agoWe could have delta.airlines and delta.faucets; and apple.computer and apple.groceries for example. You can append the country domain name, e.g. .us or .de, if you want.
- CuriousSkeptic 5y agoA fairly simple approach for all is to up the price based on contention. Regularly auction out the lease f.ex Allowing “ownership” of such resources just leads to rent-seeking.
