I feel stupid after reading this, is this normal?

  It would naturally be foreign to most, but the neat part is that it's also pretty accessible. Look up vectorization techniques and L2 cache optimization and you're most of the way to understanding. Most people who grok something like this after their first glance are specialized in the same or similar domain and probably wouldn't have an expert understanding of some things you take for granted.
