One of the Most Egregious Ripoffs in the History of Science
- dekhn 5y agoI've done my own indepth research (beyond just reading all the popular books, I have met and talked to numerous people involved including watson) and it's pretty clearly established that the photograph was shared in a departmental seminar and not private data that Franklin had some sort of special permission to interpret (this is factually established by Judson in Eighth Day, using Franklin's own diary which she willed to Aaron Klug. In my own personal estimation, even if she had lived, Franklin's work would not have qualified her for the prize.
- angelzen 5y agoThis is an interesting insight in the matter. Tangentially, the phenomenon of scientific pioneer jingoism is a fascinating topic. I grew up with Soviet books. The heroes of modern technology were Popov, Mozhaysky and Tsiolkovsky. Marconi, the Wright brothers or Goddard? Eccentric footnotes with no impact in the real world.
