Sneaky.
- baud147258 5y agoOr maybe France just built their plants there to put them close to the alluvial resources and close to consumers (between Paris, Germany, Rhine and Rhone valleys), rather than a for reddit-tier conspiracy theory idea. Edit: and the map a sibling comment provided showed that most French nuclear power plants aren't even close to the Eastern border, but rather spread out over the national territory
- masklinn 5y ago> Or maybe France just built their plants there to put them close to the alluvial resources Yep, nukes require cooling, and good cooling mean either the seashore or a large river with suitable sites. Hence there being 4 plants on both Rhone (highest discharge in the country, not including the Rhine) and Loire (longest river in the country), while the smaller Garonne rates only 2.
- mcronce 5y agoWhat exactly do you think the winds are carrying that would motivate them to place nuclear reactors based on that pattern?
- ElKrist 5y agoFor those who actually want to see a map, showing that "how France conveniently placed many of their nuclear power plants close to their eastern border" is non-sense: https://www.irsn.fr/FR/connaissances/Installations_nucleaires/Les-centrales-nucleaires/reacteurs-nucleaires-France/PublishingImages/IRSN_BDC-SUR_Carte-Parc-Reacteur-France.jpg https://www.irsn.fr/FR/connaissances/Installations_nucleaire...
- timinc 5y agoVery interesting
- cocoggu 5y agoMany is 4 out 22 plants[1] and they are located on rivers because it's needed. Also, maybe it's to have less loss when selling generated power to eastern countries? - arrosenberg 5y agoThose plants put out non-radioactive steam, while the Ruhr Valley coal that is used on the other side of the border puts out highly-radioactive fly ash.
- orwin 5y agoListen, i'm pretty sure every person who ever lived in Lille, Strasbourg or Paris would gladly pay a premium to move our 3 plant out of the way (3/21 by the way) if germany stop their peakers, coal plants and industries in the Rhur each time the wind blow westward, especially when the anticyclone is resting over France. Never had asthma before my trip to Paris, and when i learnt that most of the particles that declenched that were due to coal burning and not cars, i became very, very pro-nuclear.
