This is based on a series of articles the author wrote for the New York Times:

- mbil 5y agoI'll add that there was a 99% Invisible episode on this topic: https://99percentinvisible.org/episode/abandoned-ships/ https://99percentinvisible.org/episode/abandoned-ships/
- bena 5y agoThere's a slightly older book on the same topic The Outlaw Sea: https://www.amazon.com/Outlaw-Sea-World-Freedom-Chaos/dp/0865477221 https://www.amazon.com/Outlaw-Sea-World-Freedom-Chaos/dp/086... It's a pretty good look into the world of international sea travel as well. It even gets into the ship-breaking industry as well.
- at-fates-hands 5y agoThis was a shocking and eye opening series for me. Complete lawlessness, murder and mayhem; which is rampant in certain areas of the world. I had been under the impression that international waters were much more regulated. Man oh man, was I wrong.
- Thlom 5y agoPorts are very regulated. International waters not so much.
- hansthehorse 5y agoWhich is why you have to very careful if you gamble on a cruise ship. They answer to no gaming commission, nobody inspects their gaming machines and you are basically trusting the company to run fair games.
- bluGill 5y agoTrue, though in general they try to be a bit honest. They still need to maintain reputation and repeat business is a big part of their clients. That doesn't mean the slots will be more than 80% payout, but there will be a payout to someone.
- mcculley 5y agoI have enjoyed playing blackjack in Las Vegas. I once went on a cruise ship out of Port Canaveral. I caught the dealer cheating twice by miscounting. I haven't played on a cruise ship since then.
- myself248 5y agoEvery time I've heard the phrase "international waters", it is specifically in reference to the lack of regulation.
- ethbr0 5y agoSo much of the world is connected at low latency and high availability now, it's easy to not notice when you transition to somewhere that's not the case Large national parks, western states, or open ocean: there are still a few places you can be hours from the nearest person, without cell service.
- randlet 5y agoSeconded. I listened to the audio book. Eye opening to say the least.
