That's what I did. From there they asked me to execute and build a team. 2.5years down the line I am still the CTO and vested in a startup. My salary is nothing crazy, even below average for CTOs.
Only issue I see here is "Founder approaches". It's not just gonna happen from nothing. Either you will have to approach or someone will have to connect you. In my case it was a friend of an employee of a non tech founder.
