Tunisia appoints the first female leader of an Arab League nation
- throwawaysea 5y agoI have not kept up on Tunisian politics but if someone else knows, I am curious if this is a positive result from the Arab Spring protests or if this is an unrelated change. I know that generally the Arab Spring is viewed as not having great outcomes, as with many revolutions, which is why I am asking.

The move notably sidelined the Islamist party that dominated parliament, Ennahdha, and critics denounced the president’s moves as a coup that threatens Tunisia’s young democracy. > Saied said he acted to save the country amid unrest over financial troubles and the government’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
- raxxorrax 5y agoI don't think Tunesia was that much affected by the Arab spring. It is a relatively modern country. Still rife with corruption though at least from what I heard from people having family there. Colleague of mine is from there and was a policeman until he emigrated. Don't smoke a joint in Tunesia, tourists also have to go to prison for that, 30 years isn't uncommon.
- archeroed 5y agoWhat does female leader mean? She's been named prime minister not president. I don't know about the middle East part of "the arab world" but Algeria and Morroco for sure have female ministers too.
