Semiconductor firms can’t find enough workers, worsening chip shortage
- Red_Leaves_Flyy 5y agoIncrease wages.
- eucryphia 5y agoHard to beat Uyghur slave rates.
- sudosysgen 5y agoChinese fabs pay a lot. Taiwan actually has issues because qualified fab workers pay significantly more causing workers to move to China.
- runawaybottle 5y agoIs it that simple? What college major do you take to get into semiconductors? This might be a legitimate case of talent shortage (unlike ‘we can’t find web app developers’ - oh really?). https://www.physicsforums.com/threads/which-degree-is-better-for-the-semiconductor-industry.937411/ https://www.physicsforums.com/threads/which-degree-is-better... How many are going into that versus learning AWS? Find me the 3 month bootcamp to become a semiconductor engineer and I’ll stop this shortage in 3 months, promise.
- nradov 5y agoThere's no such thing as a talent shortage. If the semiconductor firms were really desperate for new workers then they would hire anyone who applies and then pay for their training.
- xyzzy21 5y agoActually it is. Automation in the industry is already near 90% of activities. Labor costs are NOT the biggest part of running a fab. Most people on a fab floor are people repairing or adjusting the equipment. Everything else is 100% robotic. The issue is adjusting and repairing can be pretty technical - an MS/PhD in physics or EE is pretty common for these people. It's not actually "low skill technician" work.
