- droptablemain 5y agoWhy laugh? Hammer and sickle is the iconography for worker/peasant unity, often associated with Communist parties and Socialist states. What's the joke?

- eth0up 5y agoA red queen, grasping a screwdriver tied into a knot, symbolizing our faith in planned obsolescence and love of treadmills pointing in better directions.
- sigg3 5y agoIt was the official symbol of the USSR which to many were analogous to communism, since it was (ideologically) a global movement and de facto leader of communist military might. It's completely inaccurate to use the hammer and sickle for socialism, for the same reasons. You think it's weird ideas have symbols? Like the cross? Or the swastika (whether hindu or Nazi)? Or David's star? Symbols are a powerful and effective means of communication. That is why ancient victors took care in physically defacing inscriptions and faces from art and inscriptions. And in some parts of the world they still do.

Your comment seems to indicate a vast misunderstanding of the historical and modern use of the terms socialism and communism.
- beepbooptheory 5y agoYou will get downvoted to forever for this here and elsewhere, but you are right. Socialism without at least the horizon of a classless society is just neoliberalism when it is feeling nice.
