Another major benefit of modules: when distributing native executables, the included JDK can be limited to just the modules you need.
This can potentially reduce the size of java binaries by many megs.
- brabel 5y agoYep, I have a JavaFX GUI which is fairly complex, and the jlink image it creates is less than 30MB. Notice that this includes all my code, JavaFX, the JVM runtime and even Swing (even though I don't use Swing, it needs to be included for stuff like splash screen and some platform features, unfortunately).
- vips7L 5y agoHow do you handle libraries that aren’t modularized?
- brabel 5y agoI haven't used any yet. But if I do, I will try to either make a merge request modularizing it (it's pretty easy for libraries, and it doesn't change anything for non-modularized consumers) or just try to patch it with "Automatic-Module" and then use CLI commands to setup the module correctly. This post explains in detail all the options: https://developer.ibm.com/tutorials/java-modularity-5/ https://developer.ibm.com/tutorials/java-modularity-5/
