This is laughable. All of FAANG is leaving money on the table by not running DCs full of mainframes instead of commodity hardware? OK.

- rbanffy 5y agoBeing single-sourced is a major issue. One of the reasons FAANG have created their own commoditized server standards is that they have the might to push vendors around and force them to compete in price. IBM is the only company that can sell you a fully licensed (you need a license to activate CPUs) IBM mainframe.
- amelius 5y agoI bet a rack of Apple M1 laptops would be more cost-effective, even considering that you don't need the display.
- rejectedandsad 5y agoThe M1X or M2 Mac Minis would be an excellent datacenter device if it wasn't for the licensing issues.
- amelius 5y agoWhat's with the licensing issues? Can't I do with my device whatever I want after I paid for it? And if not, can we have a law similar to the first-sale doctrine here to limit the control of the manufacturer?
- eptcyka 5y agoThat's what the M1 Mac Mini is for.
- tyingq 5y agoAgreed. I'm a mainframe fan, even, and this whole article is just a load of bullshit. Starting with making a comparison on list pricing, when commodity hardware has huge discounts, mainframes don't. Then moving on to comparisons of running Oracle on a slew of tiny VMs with ~2GB RAM each. And, no benchmarks anyway, so what does "beats" mean?
- neverartful 5y agoAgreed! Also, if the mainframe is as great as IBM likes to tell everyone, why don't they compete with AWS and Azure using their lower cost platform?
