To add on (anecdotally), I've met people online who are Swedish and you basically can't tell they aren't just native English speakers.
- cafard 5y agoBack at the time of German reunification, P.J. O'Rourke wrote that West Germans were just like Americans, except that they could speak English.
- Scoundreller 5y agoI sometimes host some EU-based ESL people with barely an accent when speaking English, and they’ve never lived in Canada or US. So whenever we drive across the US-Canada border, I always ask them to fake an accent and grammar error to avoid suspicion that they’ve been living in Can/USA illegally.
