Used Solar Panels Are Powering the Developing World
- InvaderFizz 5y agoFor those wondering, usually you can't reuse solar panels for anything grid-tied in the US as resellers typically remove manufacturers labels, which means they won't pass inspection. Additionally, any new solar installs have to use the newest standards, which means a per-panel rapid shutdown module, meaning you want the biggest capacity panel you can get, and used panels are typically 30% less sticker capacity than whatever sells as new. Off-grid usage is another story entirely. There, used panels make a lot of sense.
- anovikov 5y agoWhy do they remove manufacturers labels?
- InvaderFizz 5y agoMost likely due to wholesalers' agreements and the contract conditions for large installations. By removing the manufacturers labeling, it prevents fraudulent returns or attempts to contact the manufacturer for support/warranty. You see the same thing happen with "debranded" monitors or clothing. They're advertised as from "major brands", but debranding allows secondary market selling without risking commingling supply or taking on the support costs for a secondary market item.
