Why does Autopilot not detect parked patrol vehicles? Are other parked vehicles also being hit?
- light_hue_1 5y agoBecause the Tesla object detector is too unreliable and fires too often for parked vehicles that aren't there. So they tune it to have more false negatives (to miss objects) because most of the time you're passing by a row of parked vehicles and nothing is sticking out. It's a sign of just how bad and dangerous the Tesla autopilot really is. It should never be on the road. Dozens of people have been murdered by it. The engineers involved should all be in jail.
- diebeforei485 5y agoI don't think this is the case. We aren't seeing as many stories around regular parked vehicles being it, it seems to be mostly patrol vehicles.
- jazzyjackson 5y agopatrol vehicles are the ones stopped on the road partially blocking the lane, so, what's the opposite of survivorship bias?
- s5300 5y agoTens of thousands of people have been murdered by bad drivers. The entirety of the DMV should be in jail.
- minhazm 5y agoThere have been a total of 9 Autopilot deaths since the system was introduced in 2015. That's with 1 million+ cars on the road with Autopilot and billions of miles. 9 is a very small number. And in pretty much every case the driver was found to be at fault.
- adrr 5y agoAutopilot is just adaptive cruise control and lane centering. Almost every car manufacturer has these as options.
- ffggvv 5y agodo other manufactures call it full self driving and let you easily trick it while you sleep in the back seat?
- minhazm 5y agoEveryone says this but it’s not actually true in practice. Most of the other manufacturers systems are meant more as an emergency type feature rather than convenience. For example the Subaru system when it comes to a stop in traffic requires you to hit the accelerator to tell the car to start going again. Other systems have similar issues with usability that actually make it such that most people with the cars don’t use these features at all.
- llukas 5y ago> For example the Subaru system when it comes to a stop in traffic requires you to hit the accelerator to tell the car to start going again No it doesn't
- nradov 5y agoI think that feature was only just added to 2021 model year Subarus. I have a 2019 and after coming to a complete stop it definitely requires the driver to press the accelerator to start moving again.
- adrr 5y agoSubaru has the traffic jam assist on their adaptive cruise control. Traffic jam assist means it will handle stop and go traffic without input from the driver. https://rosap.ntl.bts.gov/view/dot/55587/dot_55587_DS1.pdf https://rosap.ntl.bts.gov/view/dot/55587/dot_55587_DS1.pdf
- jazzyjackson 5y agoI would love to see the camera feed, my guess is the police lights look like overexposed blobs against a black background and the Tesla can't figure out what to classify it as, so it's just ignored. ultrasonics arent long range enough, radar has to throw out stationary objects as "probably a part of the road" and somehow no one has technology that can tell whether the path is clear ahead of them, which surprisingly was not the first step to shipping self driving cars
- Animats 5y agoI would love to see the camera feed. Me too. The NTSB should demand it. The NTSB has statutory authority to override trade secret law in an accident investigation. Subject to subsections (b) and (g), the Board shall make public any part of a transcript, any written depiction of visual information obtained from a video recorder, or any still image obtained from a video recorder the Board decides is relevant to the accident— (A) if the Board holds a public hearing on the accident, at the time of the hearing; or (B) if the Board does not hold a public hearing, at the time a majority of the other factual reports on the accident are placed in the public docket.
- osivertsson 5y agoIt is curious and I would love to be listening in on the engineers at Tesla that investigate this crash. Is the Tesla system getting confused by the emergency lights? The article mentions they were on.
- m0llusk 5y agoCops deliberately place their vehicles to protect other stopped vehicles. This tends to result in patrol cars partially in lanes or otherwise increasing exposure.
