Toyota suspends all self-driving vehicles at PG after collision with athlete
- lamontcg 5y ago> Right now, this doesn’t appear to be entirely the automaker’s fault, nor the fault of its Level 4 self-driving technology… according to Toyota. While the investigation is still underway, it appears that human error may have caused the actual collision with the athlete, as the operator apparently took over control to make the turn.
- tqkxzugoaupvwqr 5y agoThe headline implies the self-driving vehicle was driving itself. This was not the case. > According to Toyota, the self-driving vehicle had stopped at a T-junction and was about to make a turn under manual control of the operator using a joystick. The vehicle then collided with the athlete going at a speed of around 1 or 2 km/hr.
- kadoban 5y agoThat wording is so ambiguous. "The vehicle then collided". Is that saying the human was _about_ to turn, but didn't, and the vehicle moved on its own, or the human operator did it?
- d13 5y agoI agree it makes no sense. Did the collision happen autonomously just before the driver attempted to take over manual control?
- jtchang 5y agoWeird way to phrase the headline. Someone manually controlling the vehicle with a joystick hit the person.
- dv_dt 5y agoThat doesn’t automatically absolve Toyota though. I feel there are multiple additional questions to investigate about the implementation of the manual drive system. For one: was the human operator remote or in the vehicle.
- erik_seaberg 5y agoIs this EV too quiet? Do the blind rely on engine noise from vehicles that are coming to a stop or about to move again?
