Isn't this called gain of function research? We keep making the same mistakes with viruses, seems like unethical science at this point. Why can't we stop this madness? Do when say Trust the science or technology is our only ways of this, its not true...trust the science that's what caused the lab leak in Wuhan in the first place.
This is coming from a computer scientist. We need an ethics board immediately.
There is strong evidence Wuhan used chimeric rat/humans to cause the collected and cultured sars-cov-2 to jump a crossed species.
Breaking down the Truth logically using stats and what we currently know in a data science capacity, Dr Bret Weinstein breaks down why he is 95% sure it leaked from wuhan lab https://youtu.be/RZysJvnDCFo https://youtu.be/RZysJvnDCFo
- PaulDavisThe1st 5y agoSeems that they are literally just cultivating the existing Delta variant for use in challenge trials. No gain of function research or anything like that.
- actually_a_dog 5y agoNo. > The virus is contained and can’t be allowed to evolve differently from what is naturally circulating, he said. These are "challenge trials," wherein the researchers deliberately infect volunteers in order to test vaccines and treatments. You could certainly argue that this is unethical, but it's not because the end result is going to be some kind of super virus.

- alistairSH 5y agoWhile this isn't gain-of-function, wouldn't the virus naturally mutate as it is cultured? Or is there something about the virus or the culturing process that prevents natural mutation?
- nradov 5y agoThat's covered in the article. The researchers are testing and culling mutations to produce consistent virus samples that closely match the wild Delta variant.
- thaumasiotes 5y ago>> The virus is contained and can’t be allowed to evolve differently from what is naturally circulating, he said. Sure, you can say that, but that doesn't mean you can do it. It obviously will evolve differently from what is naturally circulating. That's what happens when you separate a population.

- nokcha 5y ago>Isn't this called gain of function research? No. They are not inducing mutation in the virus; they are merely culturing the virus so they have controlled samples. Young healthy human subjects are then intentionally exposed to the virus, to, e.g., measure the efficacy of vaccines. >We need an ethics board immediately. Be careful what you wish for. Formal ethics boards and regulations often result in ossified rules that are applied blindly by uncaring bureaucrats.
