The Fall of Afghanistan Shows the Failure of Democracy
- api 5y agoDemocracy gets oversold a lot as magic pixie dust that when sprinkled on any society results in inevitable progress, which history clearly shows is false. There's another problem with Afghanistan and Iraq though, and that's the idiotic idea that a foreign nation that knows little about a culture can "impose" democracy from afar. Just imagine China trying to invade the USA to improve its system of government and you can see how ridiculous this is. I have trouble thinking of any cases in history where this has worked. The closest I can come is post-WWII Marshall Plan reforms in Germany and Japan, and the former had a democratic tradition already before its fascist experiment. Every other case I can think of has failed, usually dramatically and usually leaving something far worse in place than what originally existed.
- Arnt 5y agoOh, please. The US military set up a thoroughly corrupt regime in Afghanistan, which collapsed nearly instantly when the sugar daddy left and may be assumed to stop paying. That doesn't show the success or failure or democracy, it's entirely orthogonal. The article tries to tie it to democracy. To test that, set up an alternative: A thoroughly corrupt but not at all democratic regime, which loses the military and financial support of its sugar daddy. Would that end better? I see no reason to believe so.
- Proven 5y agoIt shows failures of many things, one of them is democracy. But we didn't need that war to know that democracy inevitably ends in socialism or some other screwup. It's certainly been a huge success of MIC.
